Why is great wedding videography expensive? – From a Wedding Videographer’s Perspective

This is a super honest post.  We don’t like talking about money or like having to justify why we charge what we charge.  However over the years, we’ve heard time and time again that many people just can’t wrap their heads around why we charge what we do.  Jon and I have even had people in person, or on the phone, say “Wow, that’s steep!” or “I’m sorry, why are you soooo expensive??”  And we weren’t even at our current prices back when people were first flabbergasted by our pricing!

We want to help clear the air, and help you make an informed decision about who you hire as your wedding videographer.  This is a once in a lifetime event that you want captured perfectly, you want to look amazing through it’s entirety, and you want to LOVE your film as a cherished family heirloom.  What’s the risk about getting a cheap videographer?

The truth is, great wedding videography is not cheap. Here is why.

First of all, wedding videography is a service based business, usually owned by one owner or a small team of individuals.  Think about who you go to for your hair cut and color services.  You have the option to go to a franchise that hires hair dressers of all skill levels, and the owner is not part of the day to day services.  These hair cuts are inexpensive, you don’t know who will be cutting your hair, and you’re in and out in a jiffy.  But take into consideration, the individual who has mastered her skills and knows she could get her own clients and opens a salon.  She is invests in her shop, her clients, her service… she spends her own dime for furnishing her shop, high quality product, and marketing.  She puts her heart an soul into her business.  Who do you think will do a better job on your hair?  Stylist #2.  Obviously, stylist #2 will be more expensive.  It’s a very customized service tailored for you.  The thing is, a number of people will want the more expensive option, as they can rest assured the service they are getting is superior to the “other guys.”  After all, it is your hair!

As full time professional wedding videographers, we pay for our own education (yes, there is wedding videography education), professional grade cameras, an assortment of lighting for different situations, an assortment of audio gear for different situations,  stabilizers, drones, etc.  The more experience, education and professional grade gear your videographer has, the higher the price point.  We care deeply about creating amazing films for our clients, and you can rest assured when you pay for us, you will get a great product and service.

***

Second, we only work one day a week right?  What are you paying for after all?  This is the biggest misconception of all time.  We shoot about 30-35 weddings in a given year.  Then we are busy all week running a business, editing, meeting with clients, working on marketing, client correspondence, and filing taxes.  There are costly camera and lens repairs, gear upgrades (technology never sleeps), business and insurance fees, etc.  Then we need to put away some money into a retirement or savings account.  After all that, then we can pay ourselves.

***

Thirdly, wedding seasons come and go.  In Atlanta, the wedding seasons are in the spring and fall.  We only have a handful of weddings during the humid heat of the summer, and not so many during the coldest part of the winter either.  Think of our job as you would a teacher.  Many teachers go through summers unpaid because they get all of their salary during their working months.  That’s exactly how working in the wedding industry is.  After all the expenses, and then paying ourselves, we also have to save for the off season when no one books.  The amount we charge is spread out over the year as an average income.  If we don’t save for the slow months, we are in some trouble.  That’s how business is done in the wedding world for those who are in the field full time.  And in case your wondering what we do with ourselves during the off seasons, we are in the office catching up on editing, attending networking events, updating the website, fine tuning our craft through further education, and vacationing (like everyone else does!).

This is the first of many posts that will be geared towards brides and grooms.  Stay tuned for more honest posts that keep you informed and help you make the best decision about who you hire for your wedding videography.

THE BILTMORE BALLROOMS WEDDING | CAMERON & ZSOFIA MARRIED – Highlight Film

We are excited to now release Cameron and Zsofia’s feature film! Coming from across the globe, only fate could have brought these two together as they met when Zsofia applied for a photography internship at Cameron’s photography studio in NYC. Our weekend started at Park 75 for their rehearsal dinner, where heartfelt toasts and sentiments were given, along with a special surprise video for the couple. Cameron and Zsofia were wed before friends and family the next day in the elegantly adorned Imperial Ballroom. The day couldn’t have been more perfect. Surrounded by the beautiful floral arrangements, décor, the cake, and the energy during the reception, this was an evening to remember. Congratulations Cameron and Zsofia, and we wish you both happiness and success on your new journey!
